Meeting Goals

  • The 100th birthday of the first published case of paracoccidioidomycosis will be celebrated during the X International Congress. This will be the occasion to render a tribute to those who described it for the first time and strived to gain pertinent knowledge in the following years. The Congress will also pay homage to those physicians and scientists who recorded and analyzed the first cases of histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis, entities that were originally discovered in Latin America.

  • The historical accounts will be followed by an in-depth analysis of the progress accomplished since the IX International Congress on Paracoccidioidomycosis held in Aguas de Lindoia, Brazil in 2005. Top speakers and researchers have been selected to present lectures and conduct sessions dealing with the most significant aspects of several endemic fungal diseases and their etiologic agents, with emphasis on paracoccidioidomycosis. Graduate students and young researchers will add novel insights to poster sessions and oral presentations, which can indicate paths to follow in the near future.

  • The various sessions devoted to clinical matters should allow medical personnel to become acquainted with the clinical characteristics of the endemic mycoses, and especially of paracoccidioidomycosis. These entities may exhibit different presentations and can be confused with other infectious and neoplastic disorders. Clinical aspects and the proper treatment patterns will be reviewed. Furthermore, this will be opportunity to learn about new research paths in clinical and diagnostic methods and to observe research trends in antimycotic therapy and new fungal targets, which will have an impact on the medical care of patients with these pathologies.

  • Finally, the X International Congress on Paracoccocidioidomycosis will give scientists interested in the endemic mycoses an opportunity to share and discuss their knowledge and doubts with colleagues and friends in an environment conducive to future advances, set in the mountainous scenario of Medellín, Colombia.
